We recently had the chance to catch up with designer Pnina Tornai, and she dishes on what’s new and now in wedding fashion. Plus, she shows us what she thinks the latest celebrity brides-to-be should be wearing on their big day!
Today’s Bride: What are the bridal trends you’re most excited to see in 2015?
Pnina Tornai: I’ve noticed a lot of sheath dresses, more see-through designs, more nude underneath the lace dresses – there are so many! Yet, another big trend I’ve noticed is comfort; brides want to feel like themselves in their wedding dress so at my latest runway show each dress had a detachable skirt. That way, the bride can have her big gown moment, and then slip into something more comfortable for the reception.
TB: When it’s time for a bride to go dress shopping, who do you think are 3 people she should bring with her?
PT: Her mother, her sister and her grandmother (if she can). The three women who are closest to her should be there because they can give her the most objective opinion and really guide her to the right dress. That’s not to say I don’t suggest bringing an entourage. I’m pro-entourage because I think it’s very difficult to make a decision like that by yourself, so a bride will need someone there who knows her well.
TB: What do you think the biggest difference between American brides and Canadian brides is?
PT: I think Canadian brides are softer and more reserved in terms of bridal style. Canadian people in general are very mild and polite, and it’s a pleasure to work with people like that. That being said, the American bride (the New York bride in particular) tends to lean towards bridal fashion that is more dramatic, daring and sexy.
TB: Talk to us about Pnina Tornai beyond the dress, and all of the accessory lines you’ve started working on.
PT: The concept behind my shoe line is that you purchase the shoe as a blank slate. Then we design and style your shoe according to your dress, so it really is a custom-made one-of-a-kind pair. It’s the perfect compliment to your dress, and which bride doesn’t want that in a shoe? In terms of the accessories, they’re made with a lot of the same materials and beadwork as my dresses, so they really can compliment almost any dress.
TB: How do you think your design style has changed over the years?
PT: I get better and better! Doing what I do, I’ve learned to understand what a bride needs, and how her body needs to function on the day of her wedding. And with each bride, and each dress I’m always learning.
TB: What do you love most about sharing photos of real Pnina brides?
PT: You can’t beat real – models are gorgeous but they’re models. To see a real woman in one of my dresses is like a glimpse into their love story, and I’m just so happy I could make their day a bit more special for them. It’s incredible to share with them such a special moment in their lives.
